Program Description

So you are treating a child with an Auditory Processing Disorder, what are you going to do about it? In this class we focus on giving you proven strategies to effectively treat this CNS weakness by using hierarchically ordered, brain-based interventions. APD’s are often an underlying factor in functional deficits such as reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension problems, decreased auditory memory, reduced speech and language skills, limited social-pragmatic skills and attention disorders. Understanding how a child processes sound and knowing where there might be specific breakdowns in the process is necessary for specific targeted intervention. In this program, participants will learn about treatments that can be used to “retrain” the auditory pathways in the brain that are underdeveloped resulting in the elimination of auditory processing problems.



Who Should Attend?

Occupational Therapists, Audiologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Physical Therapists, Educators and Administrators who are interested in learning PRACTICAL information focusing on the treatment of APD and how improving auditory processing skills can increase a child’s overall functioning in school and home.


What You Will Learn?

At the completion of this lesson, the learner will be able to:

    1. Participants will identify factors that affect auditory processing skills.
    2. Participants will understand the functional and therapeutic connection between the vestibular and auditory systems.
    3. Participants will be able to name specific treatment strategies for addressing:

a) Auditory inattentiveness
b) Decoding and figure ground deficits
c) Sound blending deficits
d) Auditory memory deficits
e) Prosodic and integration deficits Continuing,

Aimee Levin Weiner, Au.D


Dr. Weiner is the owner and hands-on practitioner of Listen Hear, a full service audiology center, serving infants through adults. She has been practicing audiology for 29 years with specialty in pediatrics since 1982. She was one of the pioneer pediatric audiologists at Miami Children’s Hospital and then went on to establish the audiology program at the South Miami Hospital Child Development Center. She created the Infant Hearing Programs at both Miami Children’s Hospital and South Miami Hospital, and later managed this same program at Broward General Medical Center. Beyond traditional hearing testing and hearing aid evaluation/dispensing, “Dr. Aimee” has always had a special interest in auditory processing disorders in children with otherwise normal hearing. She has been providing evaluation, counseling and recommendations for these disorders since the beginning of her career. She is excited that there are now direct interventions that address these processing deficits. Located within the TheraPeeds Treatment Center, Listen Hear is perfectly positioned to play its role in the proven successful treatment of these disorders for those who choose to take advantage of the interdisciplinary intervention provided by the professionals of Listen Hear and TheraPeeds.

President of Therapeeds, Inc., Julia has practiced exclusively as a pediatric occupational therapist with a diversified client population and currently practices in NY and Florida. She has trained extensively, conducted research and holds advanced certifications in a variety of pediatric treatments. She is SIPT certified, lectures and trains therapist worldwide. Julia is nationally recognized for her work in SI treatment and her unique approach to providing integrative therapy.
